Additional long-distance LED lamps - approvals, requirements and available types

Truck drivers, who often spend a few weekend in their cars, come to terms with their machines. To emphasize this bond, they try to personalize them, dress them in accessories, whether inside the cab or outside. The elements that are probably the most associated with a modified truck are all kinds of lights and lamps. The individual character of the popular truck is certainly emphasized by illuminated logos, compositions created from outlines and the most striking - long-distance halogens, the subject of which I’m about to touch upon.

Additional long - distance lamps became popular in the fifties, when routes to the Middle East started to be made. This trend also developed in Scandinavia, where today such halogens can often be found even in passenger cars. This can be explained by practical reasons, an unusually short day in winter, long stretches or little frequented roads, but you cannot produly deny halogens a kind of racial character. As a result, it has become fashionable to have such lamps in your truck and it has been going on for decades. What is more, as a result of technological development, traditional headlights equipped with halogen bulbs are being replaced in favour of LED - based lamps. However, it is well known that the light in the car, as well as most of the equipment, must meet the strict criteria set out in the regulations. This applies to both factory - fitted and accessory parts. So what should you pay attention to if you want to equip your car with additional long - distance lamps? 

The most important criterion for a long - distance lamp is European road approval. It should be placed on the front of the headlamp. Most often it is on the lamp shade, but it can also be printed on the housing. The European approval includes a combination of characters, the most characteristic of which is the capital letter E together with a number placed in a circle. This means that the product is approved in the European Union. The number is assigned to the specific country in which the approval authority is located, e. g. E1 stands for Germany, E4 for the Netherlands, etc. 

The reference number is also an important indication at the time of approval. It indicates the light intensity value. There are fixed values: 7,5; 10; 12,5; 17,5; 20; 25; 27,5; 30; 37,5; 40; 45; 50 per headlamp. A number specifying the characteristics of the headlamp shall be included in the approval marking. According to EU legislation, a car with supplementary road lighting must not have more than 4 light points and the sum of the reference numbers shall not exceed 100 or the total luminous intensity of these headlamps shall not exceed 480 lux. If this value is exceeded, the lamp shall, as prescribed, be concealed. An additional switch in the cab which initiates the operation of this lamp is not sufficient, since a lamp which is 'permanently off' is not functioning according to the regulations.

Efficient, energy - saving LED light encourage you to use them. Often, however, the right long - distance lamps are put up as a more expensive product than a typical LED light bar from a range of ordinary work lamps. Therefore, there are products on the market whose dealers use certain understatements when selling “approved” work lamps. Then the approval print with the characteristic letter E in a circle on the lamp shade is visible, but next to it there is the R10 marking. This is the number of the regulation according to which the device was granted this approval. In the case of ECE-R10 this only means that the device does not emit an electromagnetic field which could interfere with the operation of other electrical devices in the vehicle. However, it is not a certificate that allows this lamp to be used on the road. The regulation that characterizes dipped beam lamps and road halogen lamps is ECE-R112. It also allows the use of symmetrical and asymmetrical LED lamps. 

As regards the light sources that are used in long - distance lamps, until recently almost only halogen bulbs were used. From time to time, you can find accessory discharge lamps, i.e. equipped with a venon burner. At the moment, LED lamps are the most popular choice because of their increased efficiency and attractive appearance.
